CHAMPAGNE WIN BY SON OF A BRUT

Dec 10, 2017

Back in February this year, after Son Of A Brut broke thorough for his maiden win over 1350m, trainer Chris Munce stated that he always thought that the 4-year-old gelding would make a very good 1600 to 2000metre horse later in his career and so the story goes……  Back in mid-October, he won his second race over 1600m and then last Friday he notched up his third win for his owners when he took out the CASCADE UBET ‘Origin’ Jockey Series Class 2 Plate over 2240metres.

The Class 2 Plate kicked off the start of the 2017 UBET Origin Jockey Series and wearing the familiar colours of Team New Zealand, Black with a Silver Fern, Son Of A Brut’s win put the Kiwis at the top of the ladder.  Ridden by jockey Damian Browne the gelding jumped away nicely from the outside barrier and was quickly hunted up by Browne to slid across the field and as they passed the winning post for the first time the horse was in front and had the inside rail run.  Heading out of the first turn and towards the back stretch the grey Tobacco Road had taken the lead with Son Of A Brut behind him and Pillara sitting on his outside.  Just past the 1000metre mark Sir Cass had joined Tobacco Road up front with Son Of A Brut still sitting quietly in behind, a length back, along with Classy Ruby and Pillara.  With 600 metres to go the rest for the field began to make their moves from the back and as they turned for home there was a line of horses across the track. While all this was unfolding Browne had kept Son Of A Brut travelling along at a good steady pace, never more than a length and a half of the leaders and conserving energy along the inside rail.

As they hit the 300metre mark, Tobacco Road rolled out ever so slightly giving Browned and Son Of A Brut the room they needed and with two hundred to go the gelding began to pull away from the rest of the field.  The pair crossed the finish line nearly 2 lengths in front of second place getter Another Cocktail in a time of 2:23:77.

Munce was extremely happy with the win.  ‘Damian gave the horse a great positive ride.  He said wanted to go forward with from the get-go and it was the right thing to do.  I really wanted him to win here today to convince myself he can run past the 2000m.  I know he is a good strong miler, 2000metre horse but to see him win like that was terrific.’

Congratulations to Adrenaline Thoroughbreds and all his owners.
