Trainer Chris Munce believes SMARTYPY will have no problem with the seven-day back-up into tomorrow’s Kelso Wood Memorial Fillies and Mares BenchMark 75 Handicap (1050) at Doomben.

The talented Smart Missile mare backs-up after a tough run last Saturday at the Sunshine Coast when she was caught three-wide and felt the pinch late to finish third as a well-fancied favourite.

But Munce said she had recovered well during the week and was showing no signs that the drop back to 1000m would be a problem on a quick back-up.

Fittingly, the race is named in honour of Munce’s friend Kelso Wood, who passed away recently after a battle with illness. Munce has since assumed the reins of several of Wood’s former horses.

The stable also has MONACO PLAYBOY and URBAN RULER lining up on the Doomben program tomorrow.

Consistent gelding MONACO PLAYBOY will be looking to continue his fantastic recent form which has netted two wins and a second from his past three starts.

Stable newcomer URBAN RULER lines up for his second start since arriving in Queensland after finishing strongly for third over a mile on debut at the Sunshine Coast and should be suited by the step-up to 2000m.

Trainer Chris Munce previews his three runner’s chances below:

Doomben: Brisbane Racing Club@Doomben Saturday 29, September 2018 | View race field

Race 5 – 2:22PM KELSO WOOD MEMORIAL Fillies & Mares BenchMark 75 Handicap (1050 METRES)
Colours No. / Horse Name / Barrier Jockey Weight
11. Smartypy (7) Mark Du Plessis      55kg

TRAINER COMMENTS: “I’ve made the decision to back her up this Saturday. I don’t think dropping back to the 1000m will be a problem and I haven’t done a lot with her during the week, just had to freshen her up and keep her happy. She’s very fit and and from the 7 barrier, there looks to be good speed inside and outside, which will hopefully allow her the opportunity to find a nice spot just off the leading bunch. If she can get the right run and show her turn of foot she’s certainly going to be in this race right up to her ears.”

Race 7 – 3:37PM MOET & CHANDON CHAIRMAN’S CLUB BenchMark 70 Handicap (1615 METRES)
Colours No. / Horse Name / Barrier Jockey Weight
2. Monaco Playboy (6) Michael Murphy     60kg

TRAINER COMMENTS: “He’s done very well and looks a million dollars and I’m very pleased with him going into the race. He was nominated for Caloundra but while he’s going well I’d like to give him the opportunity to win a Saturday race. Michael Murphy will claim 2kg off his back and will let the horse stride wherever he’s comfortable. If he can relax for some part of the race, I’m sure he’ll very strong to the line and finish his race off well.”

Race 9 – 4:57PM MOUNT FRANKLIN OPEN Handicap (2020 METRES)
Colours No. / Horse Name / Barrier Jockey Weight
11. Urban Ruler (7) Ryan Maloney     54kg

TRAINER COMMENTS: “He’s well placed in a race like this, I feel he’s a lot better weighted here and he’s done terrifically since his last start up here so if he gets the right run just off midfield and can find the right galloping room at the right time, I’m sure he’s gong to finish his race off really well.”
